At this year’s Kidsbridge Annual Fundraiser being held on Thursday, November 3rd, one of the featured trips in our silent auction is a one-week timeshare at the Parkway International Resort in Kissimmee, FL.

Just a mile from Disney World and Epcot Center, this beautiful unit sleeps six, has 2 bedrooms/2 baths and has amenities like central air and satellite TV — plus all the resort facilities including multiple pools, tennis, and more.

Lawrence Township Education Foundation is sponsoring Lynne Azarchi’s seminar “Don’t be a bully. Don’t be a victim. Be more than a bystander” on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 7:00PM to 8:00PM.

This topic is very timely due to the passage of the “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights.”

This session will give parents the knowledge they need to work as partners with the school personnel to help identify and then combat bullying.

The seminar is free to residents of Lawrence Township.

Target Field Trip Grants Program

Looking for a way to fund a trip to the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum?

Grants are a great way to attain funding for your classroom field trips!

Apply now for the Target Field Trip Grants program to receive up to $700 for Spring 2012 K-12 field trips to “art, science, and cultural museum visits; community service and civic projects; career enrichment opportunities; and other events or activities away from the school facility.” The funds would cover any trip-related expenses including transportation, food, resource materials, supplies, and ticket fees. Teachers, principals, paraprofessionals and other classified school employees in accredited K-12 public, private, or charter schools are eligible to apply! Online applications must be in by October 3, 2011.

International STAND UP to Bullying Day

International STAND UP to Bullying Day is a special bi-annual event in which people across the world who have signed a special “pledge shirt” join together in wearing them to:

1)  Send a loud, non-confrontational message of resistance to bullies

2)  Identify themselves to victims as a source of support willing to help

3)  Draw attention to the effects of bullying, and stimulate passive bystanders into action

The stand is taken globally; with pledge shirts and services being made available to schools and workplaces in 25 different countries. All registration takes place online.

Each participant must pledge themselves and their community members by signing their name to the back of a special pledge shirt. Participants are then notified before each STAND to make sure they wear it throughout the day during each event. Shirts can be ordered at any time and are the same for each event.

The next International STAND UP to Bullying Day is scheduled to take place Friday, November 18th, 2011 although plans are in action to make STAND UP Day a monthly event! (Stay tuned)

To date, more than 2200 schools, workplaces and organizations representing more than a million people have taken the STAND. Although the movement has been primarily North American based, it’s quickly spreading across the globe and is expected to continue gaining momentum. (See all registered participants here)

Bullying Effects Test Scores

According to a study done in Virginia by the American Psychological Association, schools where the bullying climate is more severe report three to six percent lower standardized test scores than schools where anti-bullying is a priority.

Researchers collected results from over 7,300 ninth grade students and 3,000 teachers from 284 high schools in Virginia. Researchers remarked that these findings point out the poor effects bullying has within a school.

You can make anti-bullying a priority in your school by scheduling anti-bullying education programs with the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum. Your students will learn the importances of being an upstander against bullying! You will also receive free post-visit activities and curriculum for your classroom!

See how New Jersey schools are stepping up!

Many New Jersey schools have been prepping for the new Jan. 6 anti-bullying legislation by revising policies, training staff, and/or appointing anti-bullying supervisors.

Has your school started preparing for the new anti-bullying law? What sort of progress have you seen?

Lewis Goldstein, assistant superintendent for Princeton Regional Schools, states, “We are in the process of revising our district harassment, intimidation and bullying policy to comply with the requirements of the new law for Sept. 1 as well as taking the appropriate steps to inform parents of the new policy and law.”

Superintendent Victoria Kniewel for West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional Schools states, “All administrators have been trained in the new policy at this point, and all staff will be trained during year.”

Montgomery schools have also been setting up for the new legislation. Earl Kim, superintendent, comments, “We intend to comply with the letter of the law notwithstanding its imposition of an insane one-size-fits-all approach and light trigger for full scale investigative reports.”

Parents worried about cyberbullying

According to HealthDay.com, cyberbullying is becoming a big concern amongst parents. The American Osteopathic Association polled 1,000 parents of teenagers ages 13-17 on topics about social media and cyberbullying. The survey revealed that 85% of parents had children who held social media accounts. Additionally, the survey found that 52% of the parents were concerned about cyberbullying.

NJ Toughest Anti-Bullying Law

Are you aware that NJ has one of the best and toughest anti-bullying laws in the country effective this September ? The 2009 report by the New Jersey Commission on Bullying in Schools helped push this law into reality.

The Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics came up with the “Six Pillars of Character” for their Character Counts! project. Post these in your classroom and/or share this with your students or children!
